Anyone have experience mining for gems in North Carolina?

Its seems Hiddenite N.C is somewhat fake or not worth the travel as far as looking for gems, precious stones. Can anyone recommend a mine anywhere between MD and N.Carolina where my family can spend a few days digging, sleuthing, creaking for gems, stones and or even panning for gold. I have no clue and dont want to waste money or time like many that have gone to Hiddenite NC mine. I am not looking to get rich but I would like to know that I have a chance of finding something that wasnt strategically put there by the workers. we went to emerald hollow mine in hiddenite yesterday. if you go, we actually got the most gems in the 10 dollar buckets, as opposed to the 25 dollar emerald and ruby buckets. we did see someone who purchased a 100 dollar bucket. he said that he has been there before but yesterday’s findings were the most he had anywhere. it is mostly for fun or jewelry making. my uncle got 3 cuttable stones, me 3 or 4. we got the combo permit for digging, creeking and slucing. digging is way, way, way too difficult physically unless you have some big, strong guys with you. my uncle and cousin (contractor, firefighter and football player) had trouble carrying the buckets even using the shovels as leverage. my dad could not do the digging at all. he is 60 years old. the creeking was ok. my son liked it (because he is 4). i found 3 little pieces of hiddenite and a decent piece of sapphire. if we went back, i would only do the creeking and slucing. it looks like they are in the process of making the place a bit nicer. we would like to try gem mountain next time. we did have a really nice day though. oh, i did find a small, small, small piece of gold, but i dropped it when my son went to look at it. he also took what i thought was a big hunk of dirt, rock and when i washed it at the hotel, it was a sapphire.

To make receiving the toy a little more special you can always wrap it up and give it on the plane as a reward for being good in the airport.

It is important to remember that your holiday has already begun, and if you see this as a part of the holiday then you will take it slower and calmer. Try to enjoy it, play word games, play ‘rock, paper, scissors’ – take time to giggle with your children, it will make the journey pleasanter for all of you.

Finally, keep your expectations realistic. If you get through your air travel with the kids and there has been no shouting, no vomiting and minimal tears then you should consider this a success flight.

Hangman: To PLay: Players will take turns creating and gussing words. The non guessing player will be responsible for creating the word. To win the player that is guessing the word has to get the word before the man gets hanged.

Tic-Tac-Toe: To play: One player will use the X symbol the other will use the O symbol. Players will take turns by putting their symbol in an empty space on the grid. To win the first player to fill a row with his/her symbol, either diagonally, horizontally, or vertically, wins the game

Pipelines: To play: Players will take turns connecting two dots that are horizontally or vertically adjacent, and only of his/her chosen color. No lines may cross over one another. To win player to make a continuous connection from one side of the board to the other wins the game. The orange player will win if the connection is made from top to bottom. The purple player will win if the connection is made from left to right.

Dots: To Plat: Players will take turns drawing one straight line, connection two dots. When a player completes a square, his/her initals are to be placed inside that square. To win the player with the most squares wins the game, if only there in no more moves.
